Who We Are

KILLARY FJORD SHELLFISH

Meet The Team

Simon Kennedy
The Mussel Farmer

Simon originally from Dublin has worked all his adult life in fishing and aquaculture. For many years he worked on commercial fishing in Alaska which then led to the purchase of a mussel farm on a Fjord in the west of Ireland. He has been growing mussels on Killary Fjord for the past 30 years. The business has been changing and evolving from growing mussels solely for export to France and to Irish processing plants to what it does today: supplying directly to local restaurants and wholesalers on the WAW. His love of nature, sea and family life is what has rooted him here on the magnificent Killary Fjord.

Kate O'Connor Kennedy
Wing Woman

Kate came to Connemara 30 years ago, a lifetime ago to work in Kylemore Abbey for the summer. She fell in love with Connemara, met Simon and stayed. Her background is in hospitality and as a partner in a shellfish business she reaps the benefits of the daily harvest, living off the land and sea with shellfish and locally caught fish along with Connemara lamb featuring heavily in her cooking. Like Simon she has a great affinity with nature and the Connemara landscape.

The Crew

At Killary Fjord Shellfish we are fortunate to have a very hard working and loyal staff. The motley group are all from the local area and each has a strength and knowledge which has allowed the business to grow and expand at ease. Between them we have an RNLI volunteer, an informed sheep farmer an engineer and a marine qualified Jack of all trades. Along with the main cohort , we have a great team of part-time and casual workers for the busy period from the locality and France Spain Germany and other far flung places
